Parents want nothing more than to watch their children grow up happy and healthy. At times, children need help developing their motor capabilities to perform at the best of their abilities. Physical therapy does just that. Our team of multidisciplinary experts recognizes that each child needs their own approach to maximizing their development. At the Holistic Healing Center, we work with babies and children of all ages to help correct physical pediatric conditions such as Tounge-Tie (Ankyloglossia), Torticollis and Plagiocephaly, and Developmental Milestone Delay.
Ankyloglossia is a condition that some infants are born with where they have difficulties with their tongue’s range of motion. Being the most powerful muscle of the body, it is critical to get this movement corrected. Failing to adjust this function can result in:
- Feeding challenges and breastfeeding difficulties
- Speaking issues
- Difficulties in keeping the teeth clean, resulting in oral hygiene problems
- TMJ and other jaw problems
- Dilemmas when learning to breathe through the mouth
- Ear infections
- Challenges swallowing and eating
- Digestion problems
- Difficulties with daily activities such as playing a mouth-instrument
To properly treat this condition, your child will need to go through a simple surgery, frenectomy. Physical therapy is essential before the procedure to ensure that there are no post-surgical issues. Treatments help your child prepare for movements that they aren’t used to yet.
We use gentle therapeutics such as Craniosacral therapy (CST) and teach usual tongue and upper lip movements in preparation for the surgery. No matter the age of your child’s Tounge-Tie diagnosis, we are here to assist throughout every step of the way.
Torticollis in infants occurs when babies have difficulties turning their heads due to their positioning in the womb. In Latin, Torticollis literally means “twisted neck.” However, there’s no need to be too distraught by this term. Most infants don’t feel pain with this positioning, it is a relatively common condition, and it can be corrected through gentle physical therapy.
View our page on Torticollis to understand common symptoms to look out for in your child. Note that it can take up to three months for any indications to show up, so ensure you’re monitoring your newborn throughout their development.
Also known as “flat skull condition,” Plagiocephaly occurs when infants develop a flattened appearance on their head due to sleeping on or preferring one side of the head. Infants have a soft skull, so their development can occur from putting repeated pressure on one area. Most babies don’t feel pain and can function normally with Plagiocephaly. However, it is critical to get treatment because this can lead to other health conditions down the road, such as neck and spine issues.
Treatment for this condition is simple if caught early enough. Our physical therapists at the Holistic Healing Center teach parents gentle exercises and stretches they can perform on their infants at home. We perform a customized evaluation and follow-ups to ensure your child’s positioning is developing correctly.

All children are different and grow at their own rates. However, if your child is missing or delayed in a development milestone for their age group, they may benefit from physical therapy. There are several types of milestones that babies and children advance to at certain stages in their early life. These include:
- Social and Emotional: bonding with parents, making friends, cooperating with others
- Language: understands the meaning of words, copies gestures
- Cognitive: recognizes people, learning to count
- Movement and Physical Development: learning to walk, can hold their head unsupported
For delays that involve physical and motor development specifically, they can benefit from physical therapy. Fortunately, children are quick learners! Therefore, it’s vital to seek treatment as soon as possible after diagnosis. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to pediatric physical therapy at the Holistic Healing Center. We view your child’s condition, age, and range of delay to determine how we can best serve them.
